Success Public Road drain overgrown

Dear Editor,
I write to express grave concern at the fact that the drainage system parallel to the Success Public Road has not been cleared for a prolonged period. As is seen in the photographs [three supplied], one can hardly differentiate between the parapet and the drain itself. Supporting my position that the drain, which is a key outlet for residents in the area, has not been cleared of vegetation for some time now is the fact that even trees are growing inside the drain.

This is posing a serious threat to the soil stability of that section of the East Coast Demerara Road and the parapet on which are erected street lights. Failure to clear the thickly vegetated drain may eventually result in the road sliding into the canal. In fact, I have already observed that water-logging due to this very drain being blocked has resulted in the fence of a nearby yard virtually collapsing and water backing up in that yard.

The reality of this prolonged problem compels one to ask what the Neighbourhood Democratic Council and the Regional Democratic Council of Region Four are doing to provide effective and efficient drainage of this area, given the vulnerability of the East Coast Demerara to flooding as was so obvious during the 2005 Great Flood and in successive years.
Yours faithfully,
