Dear Editor,

I have always advocated that a country’s citizens should make constructive criticisms when they see things going wrong in their land, but should also be willing to give praise when and where it is due.

I have observed that the Constabulary of the George-town Mayor and City Council has created a bicycle patrol unit, beating their counterparts in the national police and creating a first for Guyana. This is very commendable and I would like to say to the Mayor ‘hats off.’ This is a very praiseworthy initiative and should receive the encouragement of all and sundry.

In fact, I would wish to propose that all of the other constabularies from the various towns across Guyana should take a leaf from Georgetown’s book and set up similar units in their communities. As for the national police, I say get with it. Your officers will be able to cover far more ground than they currently do on foot, whilst getting much closer to crimes in progress without being seen.

Police on bikes are the wave of the future; a logical component of community oriented policing. Bicycles offer immense benefit in terms of economy, efficiency, effectiveness, and positive public contact.

Well done City Hall, this time you are an act to follow!
