Dear Editor,
It is a great surprise to note in a national daily an article such as ‘Kwakwani sex workers organization promotes development, raises self esteem of members’ (SN Sep 8, 2008), which would not normally make the headlines. My congratulations to the SN for taking up such a worthy cause.  There has been hardly any attention paid to developmental news. There are a lot of NGOs working for downtrodden people who lack basic infrastructure, in contrast to those who are highly skilled and work in buildings with air-conditioners. Most commentators ask what the government has done, when they should take note of the contribution of people like Miriam Edwards who has dedicate her life to the selfless service of others. I think it’s high time that newspapers project developmental news which inspire the common citizen and conscientise those who are only concerned with themselves, including politicians.
Today most organizations focus on publicity and the like to make money from poor citizens, who ultimately suffer. Normally we do not pay attention to something until it affects us, otherwise everything goes unheard of. Miriam is an example that we need to know about and we need to follow in her footsteps, rather than passing the buck on to others.
Yours faithfully
Vikram
