Distancing himself from the people

Dear Editor,

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds’ letter in the Stabroek News (September 26) responding to an article on the IDB Report ‘How to save US$36 billion worth of Electricity (without turning off the lights)’ reveals an interesting writing style used I believe by royalty of old. On about ten occasions he refers to himself in the third person with statements like “Prime Minister … maintains”, “Prime Minister tries”, “Prime Minister would like to refer” and “Prime Minister has been approached”.

I was on the verge of giving up reading the Prime Minister’s letter when lo and behold the Prime Minister stated with great feeling the “the Prime Minister’s greatest pain …”. Hope the Prime Minister understands the impact of the Prime Minister’s style on the Prime Minister’s readers.

I am assuming that the letter was written by him and not by one of his advisors for him to edit as necessary. Mr. Hinds has been the single most approachable person in the PPP/C Administration. By writing about the Prime Minister in the third person he is effectively and uncharacteristically distancing himself from the people.

Yours faithfully,
Christopher Ram
