Dear Editor,

Last night I read a statement written by Mr Leonard George Arokium. It clearly came from the heart of a citizen who had lost money, a son and a brother in the Lindo Camp massacre of eight persons. All he seeks, like the rest of us, is the truth and justice. The President and all of us, political, religious, youth and civic leaders must know that an effort ought to be made to arrest the waning confidence in our security forces. Such an effort by the state hierarchy should now be a non-negotiable. Our security forces consist of a decent majority – But what of the others?

The Commissioner of Police told this nation that he had an eyewitness to this horrible crime: there was no ambiguity. That eyewitness should now be identified and made to take a lie detector test.

Snide remarks by the powers that be about Mr Arokium’s motives are inappropriate and unhelpful to them.

This will be a useful beginning to restore lost confidence in our security forces. This is a nation where several citizens are losing faith in the security forces, and the justice system is on the royal road to the breakdown of society. We cannot afford this, and we need no further excuses, or rhetoric, or foolishness. Let us have the eyewitness stand the scrutiny of public opinion.

Finally, let us have an inquiry or inquest as is required by the law that governs the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.
