Mr Miller should urge Bartica residents to pay up rates and taxes

Dear Editor,
I read the letter published by your paper dated Friday, October 3, 2008 written by Mr. Winston Miller and was forced to write this letter since I cannot understand why someone of his status would write a letter of this nature.
Editor, Garbage is collected by the NDC and of course this collection cannot adequately serve the community. Why? They do not have enough transportation to do so. They have one old tractor which was given to them by the British Government since 1986 to deal with the garbage collection. They collaborated with a businessman, who collects garbage on a regular basic.

But the problem is that some members of the business community and some residents are dirty and refuse to comply because they do not regard their environment. The NDC has continuously pleaded with those persons to stop, even threatening to charge them.

The writer is well aware that flooding in Bartica really started after the new concrete drains were put in place and is due to the design of the drains and not because of the NDC.

Concerning the present system of disposal of waste by the abattoir, this system was established by the then Public Health Inspector approximately 14 years ago and persons were swimming in the area, all the time. Also the animals waste is taken way offshore and dumped in the middle of the river.

If the writer has a suggestion to deal with it, I am sure all Bartica will welcome it. Mind you I am concerned about this method, but what else can they do. The park known as the Smartt’s Park was handed over to the Lion’s Club who is responsible for its maintenance.

Yes, two regattas are held annually one is private, but the writer very often works closely with both committees, also the Bartica Regatta Racers Club and is fully aware of what transpires. Please note these regattas have nothing to do with the NDC. I think the writer should encourage residents to pay their rates and taxes which will help the NDC to better deal with these issues.I have personally asked at several forums for help to deal with these issues and all we get is promises. The last was at the Poverty Reduction Strategy Consultation and what have we received – nothing. The NDC chairman went on the TV station several times talking to residents on these issue.

AS Barticans let’s stop this and work together for the proper development of our beautiful community.  Also let this be a call for those in authority to help the NDC deal with this problem.
Yours faithfully,
