There should be an investigation into the hooliganism in Alexander Village

Dear Editor,

According to the Guyana Chronicle of October 31, while Hindus were enjoying the Diwali celebration in keeping with tradition, thousands of people from Nabaclis, Paradise and Den Amstel invaded the Alexander Vishnu Mandir causing widespread damage, lighting firecrackers and squibs.

This gang of hooligans were consuming alcohol, smoking dope and destroying private property in the village. They lit squibs and firecrackers and threw them in the drains, resulting in muddy water being splashed on the houses. A letter was sent to an official seeking protection before the holiday came, but this fell on deaf ears.

The government, although numerically strong, has been unable to protect its people from this type of criminal behaviour when it depended upon the police force for the maintenance of law and order. This was the worst year ever when it comes to squibs and firecrackers all over the country. Ask the police at Anna Regina how many arrests have been made and infernal bombs seized. It was mentioned by a police source that a new ‘bomb,’ the ‘Thunder King’ had made its appearance in the country and it was very loud and dangerous. I was surprised by the behaviour and cruelty to both animals and humans by these hooligans.

I am calling on President Jagdeo to launch an investigation, as this thing is becoming unbearable in the country and giving his government a bad image.

Yours faithfully,
Mohamed Khan.
