Dear Editor,

As President Jagdeo  shuffles his Cabinet cards and exiles Ministers to foreign postings (when will the dispatch  of Kellawan Lall to Havana be formally announced?) speculation is mounting in London as to who will be the new High Commissioner here.

Informed and high level sources in and out of Guyana have told me over the past six months that the current High Commissioner Laleshwar Singh, who has been in the post since 1992 has demitted from office but it has not yet been announced.

This is the time for President Jagdeo to rise to the challenge and put somebody in this most important diplomatic/economic  setting  who can serve:

i.The diaspora in the UK who need re-invigorating and pulling together
ii.Potential investors in Guyana’s very rich raw materials from the UK. Little has been done in recent years.

iii.Guyana’s crucial relations with the UK and the EC post-EPA.
We in the diaspora await with bated breath. There are some very able candidates – at least two of whom served with honour in London in recent years.

Yours faithfully,
John Mair
