Banks Premium Beer Cup to kick-off on Wednesday

The curtains will come down on the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) 2007season with the inaugural Banks Premium Beer Cup 16-team knockout tournament sponsored by local beverage company Banks DIH Ltd.

The tournament will kick off on January 23 and will run until February 3 with all matches scheduled for the Tucville Playfield in East La Penitence.

The tournament will consist of seven premier teams and nine division one clubs divided into two groups.

GFA General Secretary, Marlon Cole, disclosed that the line up of teams include 2007 GT&T Cell Link Premier league champions Alpha United, the Guyana Defence Force, winners of the Namilco Invitational tournament both lined up in Group ‘A’ along side Beacons, Uprising, Flamingo, Georgetown Football Club, Houston Stars and Sunburst Camptown.

Teams in Group ‘B’ are Western Tigers, Thomas United, University of Guyana (UG), Pele, Santos, Black Pearl, Fruta Conquerors and Northern Rangers.

The tournament will kick off with two matches on January 23 with UG taking on Pele at 17:30 h to be followed by Western Tigers squaring off with Thomas United at 19:30 h in Group ‘B’ action.

Matches will also be played on January 25, 26, 27, 30 and February 1 for the semi-finals and February 3 for the finals and third place playoffs.

According to Cole, the winning team would capture $250,000 with the runners-up securing $125,000, while third-placed will take home $75,000 and fourth-placed $50,000.
