West Demerara cricket season geared for mid February start

The West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) is preparing to commence its much anticipated 2008 Cricket Season during the second week in February.

The Association said in a release yesterday that although a date had not yet been decided for the season opener they have been monitoring weather conditions, and were optimistic of the start in early February.

Vice president of the WDCA Rovin Stanley said that the cricket grounds in West Demerara were currently being prepared for two exciting tournaments that the WDCA plans to launch in February.

Stanley told Stabroek Sport that the first competitions of the 2008 season would be the New Line Aqua senior 20-twenty competition followed by a round robin knockout U-19 youth competition.

He also said that although systems were in place for the commencement of those two competitions, the WDCA must conclude the final of the Cecil Persaud U-15 competition between Wales and Uitvlugt which the association has programmed to be the season opener.

Meanwhile, the association staged a Warm-up 20-twenty match between Western United and Independence Sports Club last Saturday at the National Cultural Centre tarmac.

Western United raced to victory, proving that the 79 all out posted by Independence Sports Club in 17 overs during the first innings, was a feeble score.

Westerns was piloted by Wasim Haslim who struck an unbeaten 56 which included 4 fours and four sixes as his team achieved victory in 11 overs with nine wickets to spare.
