GAWA AGM on tomorrow

The Guyana Amateur Weight-lifting Association (GAWA) will hold its annual general meeting today at Olympic House, Peter Rose and Church Streets, Queenstown.

According to general secretary of the GAWA, Dion Nurse, the reports of the president, general secretary and treasurer, would be presented for adoption by the general membership.

Nurse also reported that the association has a number of activities planned for the year including the staging of the national senior weightlifting championships in Nov-ember.

Preceding this tournament will be the national novices championships which is scheduled for March month-end.

The national junior championships are scheduled for May at the National Gymnasium while the intermediate championships will take place in July at the same venue.

“We would like to send four lifters to the Criollo Cup championships as it is our belief that we can return with a medal from that tournament,” Nurse said.

Nurse added that preparations for the overseas competitions have already begun and the association was looking at the possibility of sending four lifters to Puerto Rico for the Criollo Cup competition in October.

“Then there is the Simon Bolivar championships which will be held in Caracas, Venezuela.

“This is another championships where Guyana can do exceedingly well but again the help of corporate Guyana is needed.

“People may not be too enthusiastic to give support when you are not successful, but they should understand that success takes time. Once we get the support to attend these two championships we will endeavour to return to these shores with success under our belts.”

The GAWA is also eyeing participation at the Pan Am Games to be held in Colombia, in March and the Beijing Olympic Games to be held in China.
