GT names 15 stars on All-Star team

A star-studded cast of 15 players was yesterday selected by the coaches and coordinator of the Guyana Secondary Schools Basket-ball Association (GSSBA) on the Georgetown Schools’ All-Star team which will compete against a Linden All-Stars team on Monday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The Georgetown selectors arrived at the composition of the squad after the completion of the Georgetown zone of the GSSBA competition featuring some 20 City schools.

Linden on the other hand had only five schools to choose from.

Cummings Lodge Secondary School claimed four spots on the All-Star roster.

The 15 Georgetown players that were selected are: Curtly English of North Georgetown Secondary, Yannick Dundas of Bishops’ High School, Leon Prince of East Ruimveldt, Kadeem Jacobs of St Roses High School, Travis Burnett and Dwayne Jacobs of Central High School, Michael Thompson and Delon Daniel of Tutorial High School, Keith Tute and Samuel Thompson of St. John’s College, Travis Williams, Keon Hayles, Bevon Spooner and Colwin Nurse of Cummings Lodge and Kiev Chesney of Queen’s College.

According to the GSSBA Commissioner Dennis Clarke, the selectors had a difficult time narrowing the long list of talented players in the Georgetown conference to 15 and many talented players had to be overlooked because of the position that they played.

“Myself, along with the other coaches Mark Agard, Julian Haynes and Casey Hollingsworth had to sit down and put our heads together to decide on this final fifteen and many all-star quality guards had to be left out since we did not want the team to be dominated by guards,” he said.

Clarke added: “The team also consists of many explosive forwards who are capable of playing multiple positions on the floor and with the right combination who can tell what the Georgetown All-Stars may be capable of.”

The Linden team spearheaded by last year’s junior nationals Orin Rose and Akeem Kanhai will meet the Georgetown All-Star on Monday from noon at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
