The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) through its Ramnaresh Sarwan Educational Trust Fund held its second annual presentation ceremony on Thursday where 14 students drawn from seven schools in the Lower Corentyne area received educational materials plus financial assistance at the Lower Corentyne Secondary school.

The fund, which is being sponsored by West Indies vice-captain Sarwan to the tune of $200,000.00 per year, is used to assist less fortunate students in their academic studies.
Secretary of RHTYSC Hilbert Foster called on the awardees to make education their main aim in life and to stay away from drugs as the use of drugs can only be a hindrance to them.

“Education plays a vital part in one’s life. You should make it your main aim in your life and remember to stay away from drugs. Saying no to drugs does not mean that you are weak, but that you are strong as drugs can only serve as a hindrance to your goals that you have set,” stated Foster.

He added:”Anything is possible in life once you dare to dream. Your dream can serve as your first step in realizing a goal. On behalf of Sarwan, I would like to tell you that education is the key so make good use of it.”

Principal of Port Mourant Junior High School and vice-president of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Colin Bynoe, praised RHTYSC and Sarwan for reaching out to the less fortunate students in such a way during his brief remarks.

“It is people like you with such kind heartedness we need in our society today.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks on behalf of the students who were the beneficiary here today and at the same time, urge them (the students) to take advantage of the assistance rendered to them by RHTYSC and Sarwan. However, I would like to see such gestures continued not only by Sarwan, but others who are in a position to do so,” Bynoe said.

The event was held under the $5m pro-education programme run by RHTYSC which targets 60,000 youths in Berbice.

Over 400 less fortunate students receive assistance each year under this programme.
