Amelia’s Ward United Football Club got their 2008 season off to a successful start when they defeated Winners Connections 2-1 in their first game of the Upper Demerara Football Sub Association 2008 League competition at the Mackenzie sports Club (MSC) ground Tuesday night.

In another game played on that same day, Rusal defeated Topp XX 3-1 to win the Linden Town Day celebrations competition organized by the MSC. In the Rusal/ Winners Connections match, Marlon Samuels sent the victors into the lead as early as the seventh minute, a lead they maintained until lemon time, despite the relentless attack they faced from their opponents’ forwards.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first with Winners Connections searching for the equalizer and Amelia’s Ward putting up a stubborn defence.
Thus it was no surprise when Kichaury Lashley sent his team further into the lead on a counter attack in the 59th minute which left Winners Connections defence bewildered.
They managed to pull one back, courtesy of a Orden Bovell strike six minutes later, conceding the second goal which sent Amelia’s Ward back into the defensive mode as they sought to locate the equalizer which was nowhere to be found when the final whistle went.

In the Linden Town week celebrations football final which was the feature match on the card, Rusal, through strikes from Travis Waterton (15th), Kevin Hope (22nd) and Kellon Phillips (57th) defeated Topp XX Kevin Beaton (46th) 3-1 to win the competition.
