Golden Jaguars to face Suriname next month

After much hype earlier this year following several friendly internationals, Guyana’s Golden Jaguars will face arch-rivals Suriname in their opening World Cup preliminary match next month in the neighbouring republic. The Guyanese who secured a first round bye will battle Suriname on June 14 at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium in Paramaribo in the first leg of a home-and-away elimination series. The Golden Jaguars road to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa has been rocky with lack of proper playing facilities and insufficient funds .

More recently most of the overseas-based players who were called up in the initial squad returned to their respective clubs while the senior members of the technical staff have been seconded to the National Under-20 squad. The road for CONCACAF teams to the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 begins next month with  Stage two of the home-and-away elimination series and the  CONCACAF World Cup Qualification kicking off on  June 4  with Honduras hosting Puerto Rico at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.
