Ashley Khalil The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) yesterday selected a squad of 15 players to keep the Golden Arrowhead flying at the 2008 Caribbean Area Squash Associations (CASA) Junior Squash Championships scheduled to take place from July 12-19 in Bermuda.

Last year’s overall title triumph pushed Guyana to an unprecedented15 titles at these championships, a whopping six more than any other country.
The athletes that will be looking to make it ‘Sweet 16’ for Guyana at the CASA championships are: Girls: Ashley Khalil, Alysa Xavier, Keisha and Kayla Jeffrey, Mary Fung-A-Fat, Ashley deGroot, Victoria Arjoon and Daina King.

Boys: Oliver Downes, Nyron Joseph, Alexander Arjoon, Jean-Claude Jeffrey, Raphael deGroot, Jason Ray Khalil and Deje Dias.

According to a press release for the GSA yesterday, the girls’ squad will remain at eight until King has fully recovered from an ankle injury she is presently nursing and is able to play Xavier for the final spot on the team.

The Guyana girls’ team has won  the team title several times in the past and according to the GSA, they are overwhelming favourites to win that title this year.
The squad packs some serious punch with two-time Caribbean champion Keisha Jeffrey and last year girls’ U-15 champions Ashley Khalil who is showing top form on the local scene, capturing both the U-17 and U-19 national titles. These two girls may again be the top ranked players as they were last year when they held their seeding and met in an all-Guyanese final.

Keisha JeffreyThe GSA also reported that the sessions for the tournament which is less than two months away will intensify.
