Republicans take over

By Kizan Brumell

It was a Republican show at the National Gymnasium Friday evening as the National Intermediate Championship Cadet and Under-15 boxing tournament sponsored by Neal and Massy Group of Companies got underway.

Guyana Defence Force’s Randolph Williams (L) who was the only other competitor in the junior welterweight division that was not from the Republican Gym defeated Jermaine Baker (C) in their match. The red corner marked danger in the under-15 category as Keron Thorne from the Harpy Eagle Gym and Eon Barker of the Ricola Gym recorded victories fighting out of that corner against Anthony Maraj (Ricola) and Andel Moore (Essequibo) respectively.

In the 70–74 lbs weight class, Marlon Teixeira was adjudged the winner over his Ricola Gym mate Elisha Lall.

Composed fighting came from the Cadets especially in the light flyweight category where Essequibo’s Kelvin Moore defeated Harpy Eagles’ Joshua Soodoo whilst Harpy’s Stefan Gouveia defeated Mervin Ageda of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) in a featherweight clash (125lbs).

The largest contingent of fights was in the junior welterweight category (141lbs) where the Republican Gym presented seven of the eight fighters in the four fights.

Damion Rose (Republican) defeated Keron Lord; Guyana Defence Force’s Randolph Williams thrashed Jermaine Barker; Dennis Daniels cropped out against club mate Hudley Khan and Trevor Wilson defeated club-mate Orin Henry.

Republican Zackery Montague was victorious over Mark Austin of Young Achievers and his long reach kept Austin at bay for the entire eight-minute encounter in the welterweight category.

On the other hand, Delroy James, also of the Republican, had a one-sided fight with his tacky technique allowing him to land clean, accurate punches that sealed his victory over Ryan Seales.
Richard Bourne had David Walters clueless during their match beating him all around the ring for four rounds.

The final fight of the night was nothing less than an action packed bout. Both boxers had punches floating across the ring as they fluttered energetically on the canvas but in the end Dexter Jordan (FYF) had the edge over Edwin Richards of Young Achievers.
