National table tennis player Matthew Khan produced the best performance of his career in the USA by winning his first Open singles event, the Annual Spinnathon Table Tennis tournament.
The tournament, played over the Memorial Day weekend in Connecticut at the Boys and Girls’ club auditorium, attracted players from all over the USA.
In the final Khan defeated compatriot Sydney Christophe 4-3 in a closely-fought contest.
Khan’s stunning 4-0 semi-final win against US Olympian Tahl Leibovitz set up the mouth-watering clash against former Caribbean men’s singles champion, Christophe, who had earlier downed Leibovitz 3-2 to win the group.
Christophe also took care of Jamaican Michael Henry and American Richard De Witt in his half of the draw.
Leibovitz, had previously ousted tournament favorite and another former Caribbean men’s singles champion in Robert Roberts of Barbados 4-2 in the quarter-finals.
Guyanese players were further highlighted when in the 2400 final former national player Wayne Gaskin defeated countryman Shawn `Milky’ Embleton while Paul David, back after a two-month layoff reached the quarter-final of the Open singles.
The players are back in training this week as they prepare for several major events including the US Open Warm-up events in Florida and the New Jersey Open next weekend.
