(Clairmonte Marcus photo)The National Sports Commission (NSC) yesterday donated a quantity of sports gears to the Mocha Arcadia Community Centre with the aim of establishing a boxing gym in the East Bank community.

At the simple presentation held at the Mocha Community Centre and members of the community, Gervy Harry, an officer attached with the NSC handed over the equipment to the centre on behalf of NSC’s Director of Sport Neil Kumar.

Harry during his brief remarks to those gathered including president of the Able Athletic Club, William ‘the Conqueror’ France and Wilton Spencer Sports officer for physically challenged persons with the NSC, implied that the idea when heard of by the NSC was a good one, thus the Commission readily agreed to donate the equipment.

“There is a need for organized sports in the area for it to be a success and this would serve as a stepping stone for the youths in the area to keep them out of trouble and lead them down the right road” said Harry.

In closing, he urged the youths to use the equipment in the best possible way and hoped that they grabbed the opportunity of using Mocha- Arcadia as an example of positive growth and development in Guyana.

France, who won 11 marathons in the United States of America and nine in Canada, thanked Director of Sport Kumar for fulfilling his request and donating some boxing equipment with the hope of launching a boxing gym within the community.

The NSC donated two pairs of boxing gloves, six mouth guards, two box guards, two footballs and a basketball to the community centre with a promise of providing more in the future.
