Linden’s Rudolph Mitchell strolled past his opponents on Independence Day to keep his title as Guyana’s Race Walking Champion with another convincing victory in a local competition.

The race was sponsored by Ricks and Sari Limited in association with the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club’s and commenced at the University of Guyana, Turkeyen and proceeded west along the Railway Embankment into Sheriff Street and ended at the National Cultural Centre.

Finishing second to the walking phenomenon was Roshel Joseph with Jeremy Cornelius third.

Mario Fagundes and Debidyal Harold were fourth and fifth respectively.

Prizes were donated by Ricks and Sari Ltd. and Ralph Ramkaran while the Guyana Beverage Company and Ansa McAl Trading provided the refreshments for the event.

Meanwhile, the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club in association with the Green Path Foundation’s Caricom Day 2008 Race Walk will take on an international flavour with race walkers from the Caribbean expected to match strides with their local counterparts.

The race will start at 6:30am and the athletes will start from the Guysuco La Bonne Intention (LBI) Estate and will proceed west along the Railway Embankment and conclude at the Caricom Headquaters Liliendaal.

Trophies and other prizes will  be at stake in senior and junior males and females and veteran categories.

Interested participants must be at the starting line by 6am.
