GABF Inter-Association Championships

With the Georgetown (GT) seniors and under-20 players already tasting victory in their respective divisions, the GT under-23 players and coaching staff alike are pumped and ready to continue in the winning ways of the capital city team in the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Inter Sub-Association Championships.

Going into this weekend’s game against Linden, Head Coach of the GT U-23 team Mark Agard and Assistant Coach Vijai Panday yesterday released the names of 12 players who  they said are the perfect combination of youth and experience.
The twelve players are: Ryan Stephney, Ryan ‘Cornmeal’ Gullen, Randy Burgess, Jaime Mayers, Jermaine Lovell, Jason Squires, Kevin ‘Micey ’Cumberbatch, Yannick Wade, Travis Williams, Jermaine Hamilton, Marvin Mc Ella and Victor Rhobe.

When Stabroek Sport caught up with Agard yesterday, he said, “We have a squad of 12 talented players who have a great deal of skill and speed and we also have some players who have played at the national level before.”

He said too: “I have great expectations for the team going into this weekend’s match-ups against Linden and from what I have seen so far the team can perform in any adverse conditions that may arise and most of the players want to show that they deserve to be here.”

Agard also mentioned that they have selected a few talented but relatively young players who they plan to utilize in their rotation as a way to groom them for future tournaments.

One such player is 19-year-old Travis Williams, who is currently playing for the Pacesetters Basketball Club. Williams who failed to make the cut for the GT U-20 squad said that he had been working very hard ever since and is elated to be finally selected.

“I am very excited about playing for the [GT] U-23 team and I will use this opportunity of playing above my age category to improve and take my game to the next level,” the 6’1 small forward said.

The GT U-23 team will take on Linden U-23 in the second game this Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The Linden U-23 squad reads: Orlan Glasgow, Leonard Caleb, Dennis Anderson, Kogo Sandiford, Alwin Rodney, Stryon Obermuellor, Chris Williams, Javon Nelson Collin Benjamin, Jason Blair, Akeem Kanhai, and Bonnie Wilson.
