Persaud promises motor racing fans a treat

President of the Guyana Motor Racing Sports Club Vishok Persaud has promised motor racing fans a treat this Sunday when round three of the 2008 Motor Racing championships takes place.

“Fans are in for a treat,” Persaud told Stabroek Sport in an exclusive interview yesterday.

He said this week-end’s championship, dubbed the `Ultimate Race of Cham-pions’ will see over 25 car, motor-cycle and go-cart racing events taking place.

Persaud, himself a motor-racer (Car) will take part in the group four category, which, according to him, will be exciting as drivers like Mark Vieira, Kevin Jeffery, Andrew Morgan, Canadian Shawn King and Trinidadian Ravi Singh will all be looking to break Andrew King lap record of 35.07 seconds.

Most of the drivers had done some modifications to their vehicles.

Persaud revealed that Vieira recently bought a new dry sump Guru engine for his RX 7 while Morgan was now piloting a tube frame rotary powered Mazda RX 7 vehicle.

King’s car is now fitted with a Dave Diedrick-built 13B rotary engine, while Persaud himself has a new Cosworth high-tech engine for his Subaru Impreza.

Young hotshot Ryan Rahaman’s new car has a Ford Cosworth Turbo Charge Engine.Meanwhile, the international flavour of the meet is getting tastier with the participation of some eight drivers from Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, United States of America and Canada expected. Apart from King, Ravi Singh, John Joseph, Kemal Rahaman, Kawall Deosarran and Oliver Tjin Lip Shie are all expected for Sunday’s meet, Persaud said.

Come Sunday, there will be five race car, two motor cycles and one go-cart group and more than 40 drivers and riders on show. Commenting on the rain and the possibility of the meet being affected by the weather, Persaud said that the South Dakota circuit was not noted for rain but said even if it did rain the die-hard motor racing fans would not let the rainfall affect them.

And, on the question of security, Persaud said that numerous police officers as well as private security firms would be on hand to protect the expected four to six thousand fans.He added that while the circuit was normally packed with about 12 to 15 thousand persons, they would normally turn up at the international meet which is scheduled for November. Persaud said the involvement of rookies at the meet was an attempt to get new blood into the sport. Additionally, he said, the motor-cycle and go-carts will provide additional action for the thousands of motor racing enthusiasts who are expected this Sunday.
