Black Hawks, Harpy Eagles excel at Martial Arts tourney

The Apex-funded second annual exhibition Martial Arts tournament held last weekend saw Black Hawks walking away with the lion’s share of the trophies and medals with host Harpy Eagles also excelling.

The event, which attracted more that 100 participants, saw five teams taking part namely the host Harpy Eagles, Black Hawks, Little Diamond, Great Diamond and best of side kick fielding very competitive teams.

According to Sensei Troy Bobb snr., a third Dan black belt, this year’s tournament was a great success as compared to last year’s when only the Harpy Eagles and Black Hawks participated.

Additionally there was some international presence in the form of Barbadian John Phillips and Trinidadian Trevor Smith who performed exhibitions.

Sensei Bobb, who is trained by United States of America fifth Dan Shotokan Sensei Randy Sandez, said that four fighters from his club were graded by Sensei Sandez, who promoted Jonathan Khadroo, Tyrone Niles and Trevor Bobb, junior to first Dan while Webster McRay was promoted to third Dan. Other good performances came from Venita McDonald of the Harpy Eagles club with three first places, Tyrone Niles, Kwame Glenn and Peter Gopaul, with two first place finishes each and Dion Bobb, Gerald Beaton, Omesh Lallchand, Jonathan Khadaroo, Jamal John, Chaka Innis, Earl Deokarom, Joshua Ali and female Nicola McDonald with one first place finish each. Sensei Bobb said he was grateful for all the support he received and wished to thank all the clubs which took part.
