Annual Wheat-Up cycle race set to ride off Sunday

The Annual Wheat Up cycling road race sponsored by the National Milling Company (NAMILCO) will take place on Sunday starting at 08:00 hours.

The race will roll off from Namilco’s head office at Agricola  and will proceed to Long Creek on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway before returning to finish at the Two Brothers Gas Station at the junction of Eccles and Flour Mill Road, East Bank  Demerara.

As is customary, veteran cyclists will ride the full distance and will turn back at the Linden/Soesdyke Highway and the East Bank Road junction.

Most of  the country’s top racing cyclists are expected to take part in the race organized by Roraima Bikers Club.

President of Roraima Bikers Club, Brian Allen, organizer of the race disclosed that the race which is normally held on Caricom Day was rescheduled to coincide with the activities of Carifesta X.

The  Caribbean Festival of Arts will be held in Guyana from August 22- 31.

The winner in the senior category will cart off a trophy plus a cash prize while cash prizes will go to the other five top places.

The junior winner will be awarded a trophy as well as a cash prize, while cash prizes will be presented to the other two top finishers.

There will be a similar arrangement for the veteran riders.

There will also be special awards for the first Roraima Club rider in each of the three categories.

According to Allen, a very large turn out is expected at the starting line, since all cyclists that participated  in Anguilla and Trinidad have returned home and will be in action. Managing Director Bert Sukhai and other top executives of NAMILCO will be on hand to start the race and present the prizes at the finish.

Allen said the executives and members of the Roraima Bikers Club would once again like to thank Namilco for its continuous sponsorship of this event, and would assure them that with their support this event will continue to grow.
