– continued sponsorship promised

Manager of Public Relations and Operations at Demerara Bank Limited Shawn Gurcharran yesterday handed over a  $395,000 cheque to  Secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board Angela Haniff as sponsorship for the 40-overs Second Division Cricket Competition in Berbice which should bowl off in another few days.

According to Gurcharran, the bank’s recent opening of its Corriverton branch was taken into account in sponsoring the  competition since the bank feels that as a good corporate citizen it should give back to the society.

Meanwhile, Berbice Cricket Board Vice President David Black was loud in praise of the sponsor and expressed the hope that it will continue since  over 40  clubs will be taking part in the round robin run tournament.  The fixtures will be announced later.
The round robin stage is expected to last for one month and the other stage, where the two finalists will be decided, will take  another month, weather permitting.

The money, according to Black, will be used for prize money, trophies, balls and umpire fees with a first prize of $50,000 and a trophy up for grabs and $25,000 and a trophy going to the runner-up.
