An eight round Swiss system chess tournament to celebrate Carifesta begins on Sunday at the Kei-Shar’s sports complex on Hadfield St. The tournament is being hosted by the Guyana Chess Federation and sponsored by Demerara Distillers Limited under the Topco Juice Brand.

The Guyana Chess Association, the forerunner of the Guyana Chess Federation, was established in 1972, the same year that Carifesta was first held in Guyana.

The tournament would be held in the Junior and Senior categories with a time limit of 90 minutes per game or 45 minutes per player to complete the game.

Play is set to start at 10 am sharp.  Cash prizes would be awarded to the top finishers in both sections.

Both local and foreign chess players who may be visiting Guyana for Carifesta are invited to participate in the tournament. The first four rounds would be played this Sunday (August 31) and the remaining four rounds would be played the following Sunday. Chess players are asked to bring along their chess set and clock.
