Camptown awarded abandoned game

Sunburst Camptown Football Club was awarded with a win of their abandoned quarterfinal game against Pouderoyen Football Club in the Alpha United Carifesta football tournament.

The game was abandoned last Thursday after Camptown was awarded a penalty and the Pouderoyen goalkeeper refused to save the shot. It all happened when Sherwin Cadogan,  on one of his overlapping runs from the defensive area in Camptown’s half of the field,  rounding his marker Garland Lewis,  but was subsequently tripped  inside the penalty area in the 80th minute of the game.

As referee Roy Mc Arthur, who was not far from the scene of the play rushed in and pointed to the penalty area, he was surrounded by members of the Pouderoyen team both on and off the field, who apparently told their custodian not to take to  the goal for the resulting penalty kick.

The game was halted for some 10 minutes with Pouderoyen showing no signs of rescinding or their decision. The referee then blew the game off leaving the tournament organizers to come up with a decision on whether Camptown should advance to the next round or order the game to be replayed.

The disciplinary committee of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) met and after some deliberations, awarded the game to Sunburst Camptown who are  the present leaders of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/ GT&T Cellink Plus sponsored Premier League competition.

A letter to that effect was sent to the president of Alpha United, Odinga Lumumba,  who are the organizers of the tournament. The letter stated that the game was awarded to Sunburst Camptown, whilst Pouderoyen themselves can expect some form of punishment to be decided by the said committee for bringing the game into disrepute.

Camptown will now face Pele Football Club who defeated Bakewell Topp XX in the last quarterfinal game 1-0 in a  semifinal encounter.
