Grimes’ double sinks Houston Stars

A Sherwin Grimes double in the 16th and 37th minutes helped steer Beacons to a 2-1 victory over Houston Stars as action in the Banks Beer-sponsored Georgetown Football Association (GFA) First Division competition continued at Independence Park (Parade Ground) on Tuesday.

Even though conditions on the ground were not suitable for play owing to large tyre tracks in some areas, especially in the penalty box on the western half of the field, both teams still managed to display a high level of football.

However, it was Beacon who went ahead following a perfectly taken free kick from Grimes who caught the opposition’s defence napping following an infringement against him at the top of the box in the 16th minute.

The score remained one nil in favour of Beacon at lemon time, but two minutes after the resumption of play, Grimes worked his way down the left wing and sent a rocket-like shot which left the Houston Stars custodian clueless.

Houston never wavered in their attack on their opponent’s goal, and were rewarded when Jermaine Gilbert scored on the run in the 51st minute, but even though they searched for the equalizer, it never materialized and at the sound of the referee’s whistle, Beacon joined Thomas United, BK Western Tigers and University of Guyana (UG) in the list of teams to record victories in the competition.

And, at the Camptown ground, a hat-trick from Leon Yaw in the second, ninth and 24th minutes of play, coupled with goals from Shem Porter, 20th and Elroy Squires, who scored from the penalty spot in  the 63rd minute, helped Flamingo beat Northern Rangers 5-0.
