Rose Hall Town Week to start with cycle race

- basketball and football matches same day

Seven days of activities have been organized for the celebration of the Rose Hall Town 38th anniversary with a 30-mile cycle race tomorrow, riding off in two bunches, from Adventure to Rose Hall and simultaneously from New Amsterdam to Rose Hall.

Additionally the Rose Hall Town Area H basketball court will come alive when Rose Hall Jammers takes on Fyrish for the Corentyne inter-village basketball championship.

According to organizer Vibert Garrett, the Banks Malta-sponsored finals was scheduled to be played during the Rose Hall Town 38th anniversary and this game will bounce off at 7:30pm. Garrett said the game was  a collaborative effort between the Corentyne All-Stars Football Club and the Rose Hall Town Mayor and Town Council. This collaboration is part of the celebrations that will lead up to the Town Day on Saturday.

Garrett added that the football game to be played at 5:00pm will see Monedderlust Football Team tackling their Corentyne All-Star Football Club counterparts.

Additionally, teams from Georgetown to Orealla will be participating in the week-long football tournament.
Garrett said that the intention of the sporting activities was to encourage youths into football and as a whole to develop football in the township.

However, a proper ground is something that was lacking and Garrett added that the youths have to take up “street” football or play on any “open” space available.

But this has caused the youths to be seen as nuisances in the society, something he is hoping to correct. The development of the youths cannot continue under such circumstances and Garrett is worried that they will “devolve into less proper initiatives.”

“There is a need for a proper football ground so as to attract more youths to the game and also clubs,” Garrett said. This will ease both a “social and a recreational problem for the community and help the clubs to evolve.”

Meanwhile a volleyball competition is set to be served off on September 18. The Rose Hall Town Day started in 2004 under the Mayorship of William Hendrax.
