Led by an unbroken 71-run, unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership St. Winifred’s Secondary School recovered from 37/6 to reach 108/6 in reply to Monar Educational Institute 107 all out yesterday.

The game is a match of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) 2008 national inter-secondary schools under-15 competition.

The competition, which bowled off on September 8, is being played under the auspices of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB).
In a match played at the Demerara Cricket Club ground, Queenstown, Monar batted first and was shut out for 107  of which they were indebted to a healthy contribution of 53 extras.

Monar never recovered from the early loss of wickets as the St. Winifred’s, led by Iola Joseph with three wickets and  A. Samuels and M. Nelson with two apiece all but put the spoke into the Monar’s innings.

Andre Gomes with 31, inclusive of six fours and Donwick Rodney (14) were the only batsmen to offer any resistance for Monar.
St. Winifred’s at their turn were in danger of a comprehensive defeat as sensible bowling from Monar’s strike force  of  Donwick Rodney and Selwyn Williams with two wickets apiece and Nickel Carter with one saw them slump to 37-6.

But an unbeaten 38 from Dorville Stewart, who watched as his teammates fell bowling pins, found a useful ally in Joseph, who scored an unbeaten 20 to steer his team home.

Stewart and Joseph’s enterprising 71-run partnership effectively took the steam out of Monar’s bowling attack and they failed to pick up another wicket.

Stewart who has no divisional cricket experience, stroked six boundaries to all corners of the ground as they managed to knock off their opponent’s score with 33 overs and one ball to spare.
