Caribbean number two junior girls’ player Trenace Lowe copped two titles last weekend at the Tobago Open table tennis tournament held in the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Lowe breezed past her rivals to win the girls U-18 and under-21 singles titles to be the most outstanding player from Guyana.

And the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club’s table tennis team under manager Harold Hopkinson and coach Colin France gained three bronze medals.

France, who served as player/coach took third in the men’s open singles which was won by Anthony `Sandfly’ Brown who defeated Curtis Humphreys in the final.

France and veteran Trinidad player and former Caribbean men’s singles champion Lionel Darcuiel, were the bronze medallists.

The other bronze medals were won by Denzil Hopkinson in the boys’ U-15 singles and Kyle Edghill in the boys’ U-10 singles.

Lowe captured the girls’ U-21 singles when she defeated Ashley Quashie 12-14, 11-8, 11-9, 11-4.

In the semi-finals Lowe got past Kristen Scipio 13-11, 11-3, 11-5 while Quashie won from Avernelle Abraham 11-5, 11-6, and 11-1.
Lowe won the girls’ U-18 title defeating Abraham 8-11, 11-3, 14-12 and 11-2.

In the semi-finals Lowe defeated Quashie 11-8, 11-6, 11-8 while Abraham got the better of Kadesia Abbott 11-6, 8-11, 11-7 and 11-7.

In the girls’ U-15 category Chelsea Edghill and Adielle Rosheuvel were defeated in the quarter-finals.

Edghill beat Renuka Sitram 5-11, 11-8, 11-8 but lost to Krystal Taylor 11-1, 11-13, 9-11 while Rosheuvel, who got past Shannon Watson 11-7, 11-1, was defeated by Abbott 9-11, 6-11.

In the girls’ U-13 Edghill again ran into Taylor and lost 7-11, 11-7, 11-13 in a first round match.

In the boys’ U-15 singles Hopkinson reached the semi-finals before bowing out to Matthew Pillai 3-11, 9-11.

Pillai went on to win the final beating Khadeem Moore 11-9, 7-11, 11-7.

In the boys’ Under-10 singles Kyle Edghill placed third after losing his semi-final match 6-11, 7-11 to Marc Pillai the eventual winner.

According to Harold Hopkinson the players, including former junior national player Edinho Lewis, were well taken care of by Bob Roopnarine secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago table Tennis Association.
