Fulfilling a promise made to the media just over a year ago, teenage female golfer Joann Deo emerged winner of the annual Ansa McAl Medal Play Golf tournament played Saturday at Lusignan Golf Course.

Deo, a student of the University of Guyana (UG) who has been among the top performers  for the past few weeks won the top prize this time round stopping a large and competitive field in ideal conditions for golf.

Playing off a handicap 33, Deo recorded a gross 96 to end with a net 63 beating into second position seasoned campaigner Esau Shamshudin who had a net 66 from a gross 82 playing off a handicap 16.

Robert Hanoman, who recently won the Muneshwar’s Ltd. tournament, placed third with a net 66 from a gross 90 playing off a 24 handicap.
In addition to winning the first place award, Deo also won the Hole in One prize and was also declared the best female player on show.
Deo, who is from a family of golfers had been a regular visitor to the Lusignan Golf Club until she started playing the sport just over a year ago, had indicated that she, eager to be one of the top female players locally.

Former Guyana Open men’s champion, another teenager Avinash Persaud who is currently campaigning overseas, returned to local action and had a Best Gross of 70.

Ansa McAl representative Nigel Worrell was on hand to make the presentation to the outstanding performers and pledged his company’s continued commitment to golf locally.

There were also remarks by executives of the Lusignan Golf Club who thanked Ansa McAl for  its continued support.
The local golfers have been tightening their game in preparation for the Guyana Open billed to take place on November 13 and 14 at Lusignan and will attract players from the Caribbean and North America.
