Early morning showers and bad light yesterday curtailed play on the opening day of the Smirnoff Guyana Open golf championships forcing several players to complete their rounds very early today at the Lusignan Golf Club.

Several players braved the early showers but players competing in the Men’s ‘A’ Flight were forced to abandon play just after 17:30 hours and, according to Captain of the Lusignan Golf Club, Jerome Khan, play will resume at 06:30 hours this morning to complete the first round.
Defending ladies’ champion Guyanese Christine Sukhram playing off an eight handicap, made an impressive start in that category finishing the first day with a gross 74 to end with a net 66.

Suriname’s Petra Beems (18 handicap) recorded a gross 93 to end with a net 75, while Rita Heikens (handicap 30) recorded a gross 109 for a net 86.
Andre Cummings (handicap 25) heads the men’s  “C” Flight (18-28 handicap) recording a gross 93 to end with a net 68. He is followed by Anders Voigt (handicap 28) gross 97 and net 69. R. Rajkumar (handicap 15) was leading in an incomplete Men’s ‘B’ Flight (10-17 handicap) with a net 68 after recording a gross 83.

The men’s ‘A’ flight was very competitive but  the completion of the first round will determine the leaders.
The tournament will end today and will be followed by the presentation ceremony.
Local beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd. is sponsoring the tournament for the third successive year under the Smirnoff Vodka brand.
