A 25-year-old man who allegedly robbed a trainee teacher of her cellular phone was yesterday remanded to prison when he was brought before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Paul Lui-hing of Lot 4 Durban Street, Lodge pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

The virtual complainant told the court that she was walking along Avenue of the Republic and she was on her phone.

She said she felt someone try to tug her cellular phone from behind but she held on to it. It was while she was trying to resist that the man began to hit her. According to her, when the man dealt a cuff to her mouth she let go of the phone and began calling out for help.

Public-spirited citizens then pursued and captured the accused and he was subsequently arrested by the police.

The matter will continue in Court Two on February 20.
