Two men, who allegedly stole four empty drink cases from a Sheriff Street business on February 6, were yesterday taken before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on charges of simple larceny.

Mark Anthony, 25, of 131 Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty pleaded guilty with explanation and Leroy Pitt, 36, of 51 ‘A’ Field, South Sophia Georgetown pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Christopher Ramroop, 30, of Carifesta Avenue; Otis Hall, 30, of Section ‘B’ Turkeyen and Mohanlall Samaroo, 47, of 60 Goed Fortuin – three security officers of the said business, were also charged with unlawfully assaulting the two accused. They each pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to them by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Pitt in his defence explained to the court that the drink cases had fallen from where they were stacked on the business premises, to the property next door and it was there he went to pick them up. According to the man, one of the security officers who saw him went over and hit him and later the men placed a plastic bag over his head and beat him. He also said that Anthony was not with him on the day in question.

Samaroo, however, said the empty bottle cases had not fallen on any property next door.

According to him, one of the men was on the business premises and he was throwing the empty cases to the other man next door.

Anthony and Pitt were placed on $15,000 bail each and the security officers were each placed on $40,000 bail.

The matter continues on March 14 in Court Two.
