The HoatzinGuyana has been hailed as a bird watching destination on par with world class locations such as Costa Rica, Jamaica, Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago.
UK tour operator Ornitholidays recently brought its first and completely sold out bird watching tour to Guyana from March 1 to 14, with tourists from England and Ireland.
The tour was led by Ornitholidays principal tour guide Mike Witherick who has led more than 135 tours to all seven continents. Witherick said that the Guyana experience is equal to any of the other locations he visited in the region and the local tour guides were well informed.

The stops for the trip included the Botanical Gardens, Mahaica River, Shanklands Rainforest and Resort, and Kaieteur Falls. Standout birds that the group spotted included the Hoatzin, Crimson Topaz, Capuchin bird, the popular and much sought after Harpy Eagle, several species of parrots, toucans, hummingbirds and raptors.
Ornitholidays placed Guyana on its bird watching destination list after Witherick made a familiarization trip in February 2007, when Guyana was recommended to him by Judy Karwacki, the tourism specialist working on Guyana’s Birding Tourism Programme.
Ornitholidays has already planned and sold out another trip for one week in 2009 and another is scheduled for 2010.

Another wonderful birdwatching tour to a remote ecolodge in the rainforest (saved from loggers by the lodge) is run by FosterParrots. See their website, fosterparrots.com. Various wild macaws, harpy eagles, and much more can be seen.
