Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee says the escape of high-profile prisoner Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles is “unforgivable and inexcusable” and those culpable will “face the music.”
Rohee made these comments at a press conference yesterday; the first time that he has addressed the public on Charles’s escape on Wednesday last. Though the minister didn’t provide new information on the man’s escape or the hunt for him, he pointed out that the reality is that a high-profile gang member is on the loose. Rohee cautioned against entering into a ‘blame game’ on the issue but he pointed out that “No red herring whatever the shape, form or fashion is acceptable to the administration.”
At a press conference last week, acting Police Commissioner Henry Greene had told reporters that the force was taking the matter seriously and following investigations officers found to be negligent will face interdiction from duty. Greene said negligence was the main cause for Charles’s escape as certain standard procedures may not have been observed. Though he was being held in the lock-ups Charles was not shackled. However, to date Greene has not made it clear whether high-profile prisoners are expected to wear handcuffs or hand and foot cuffs while in the lock-ups.
In response to queries about whether any action has been taken against any officer at the Sparendaam Police Station, Rohee said that the Office of Professional Responsibility is still dealing with the matter and that any such disclosures would be made at the right time. Meanwhile, a police source revealed to this newspaper on Monday that they have received information that the fugitive was spotted in an undisclosed rural location and that they were responding to leads.
As had been reported Charles escaped from the Sparendaam lock-ups after making a court appearance. He crawled under loosened boards in the lock-ups and made his way out of the station unnoticed. Police only realized that he was missing some three hours after his escape.

I don’t believe that Skinny is dangerous but be careful your ransom of 2 M may make him a killer. A true killer after escaping from police would not go to the village to seek some food.
No way should a prisoner should be shackle when in lock up. The lockup should be properly secure that is the floor , door and window if that is not so then it is those who are in authority should be blame. If the lockup is properly secure then it is the officers who should be accountable.
In modern times the prison floor should never be in wood time for a change the hole security system needs to be look at and changes made.
It appears to me that the Home Affairs Minister and the commissioner should be held accountable for this one not the officers.
I agree with u Springs, Minister Rohee stated that “it is inexcusable and unforgivable, and those found culpable would “face the music,” now my question is this to Minister Rohee, “Who is inexcusable for RK,Fineman, Skinny and the jail break.?
Finally – something from ‘The Minister of Home Affairs. But it is the same old horse being beaten on and on. The responsible individuals should have been ‘dancing to this MUSIC’ already.
Look – somebody responsible for the prisoners NOT being visited for approx.
3 hrs. Somebody responsible for the floorboards not being fixed for quite a while. (I remember a blogger saying here last week that the floorboard was a problem there for quite a while because he/she worked there in the past).
Why can’t at least these 2 somebodies be disciplined immediately???
Get the documentation of the the requests for repairs and the person whose desktop it stopped is responsible!
What does the ‘Office of Professional Responsibility’ need to do with something as open and shut like this other than make people feel that they are seeking strategies to ‘cover’ someone?? This beginning to smell like the red herring he (Rohee) mentioned.
It is the first time I agree with the home Affairs Minister on anything when he posited that the escape of Skinny is “inexcusable.” Damn right, it is! This government is becoming more and more irrelevant by the minute and it is my belief that this cabal should resign in SHAME for their incompetence to govern effectively! This is clearly a case of “SQUARE PEGS IN ROUND HOLES.” It is amazing how these guys can mislead a whole nation and be comfortable doing so.
What about a reward for the guy who escaped from the hospital after being shot by the cops while attempting a kidnap. No reward has been placed on the heads of the persons who killed Marcyn King and Ronald Waddell. The Government is blatant obvious about whose lives it places value on.
And you guys argue about the existence of marginalization. How can it be more obvious than in the selectivity of justice.
I bleed for my country. $2m as reward for skinny”s capture? Where did they get the money? (is it the tax payers?) Would it not have been cheaper to repair the ‘loose floor boards’ when it was reported?.
Inexcusable is apt. But what music will they face? ….silent night in christmas falls?
Race horse named ’surprise’ died and no red herring whatever the shape, form or fashion is acceptable to this administration.ok mr. minister PLEASE!! ENOUGH REPERTOIRE!! DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING OF SUBSTANCE?
trust me it was way BETTER in colonial times it wont get worst if invaded by chaves or the dutch.
Wasn’t this the person that inspected the police stations and said they were ok?? Maybe we should start rolling heads from the top.
In a dictatorship the top officials are not accountable to the masses.
They find a fall guy at the lower echelon to be an example and lull the people into a false sense of security. It’s really despicable what’s going on in Guyana!!!
Another piece of evidence to confirm the incompentence of the political administration.
All of this being done at the expense of ordinary Guyanese.
One wonder what the family of Mr. Satydeo Sawh and the relatives of those massacared in Lusignan and Bartica are experiencing, when they receive information of this blunder on the part of the authorities and of ‘ Skinny ‘ s escape.
Its hard to believe that he did those murders alone…. why don’t they have any other suspects? Since nothing was taken- was he hired by someone? What are the motives here?
