The Alliance For Change (AFC), expressing outrage at the upsurge in violent robberies is demanding that serious measures be put in place to protect those travelling to the city to conduct business.

This comes several days after scrap metal dealer Akbar Alli of Longwood Enmore, East Coast Demerara was shot dead by one of two bandits, as he was about to enter a Brickdam auto dealership to conduct business. The bandits had seconds before grabbed a small travelling bag containing $2.1M from his wife. The couple had earlier visited a bank in the city.
A release from the AFC said it was outraged at the violent robberies, which continue unabated and most recently resulted in the death of Alli.

“Despite all of the high security measures put in place including gifts of vehicles, the constant aerial surveillance by helicopters and high-level training sessions of SWAT units being shown in the daily news, the average citizen and businessperson are now more vulnerable to criminality,” the release added.

While expressing deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Alli, AFC called for measures to be put in place to protect those who travel to the city to do business and are being “preyed upon and exterminated like sitting ducks”.

The release said that it was now time for the police to come out from behind their barricade and confront the criminals in the streets and in their dens.

“If the police hierarchy remains safely cocooned within fortified walls and sunset street closures, what confidence does any citizen have that his or her life and property safe?” the party questioned before adding that if the Police Force does not act now to serve and protect all citizens, a new form of vigilantism will emerge.

Why people are still walking with all that money on them? What happen to a cheque?

    • Ginger56 UNITED STATES says:

What cheque? I believe the previous reports said that he was on his to pay workers. Most of those workers don’t have a bank account. Furthermore, the workers want to have cash in hand, which is much easier for them.

  2. cochore UNITED STATES says:

The police?.. What police are you guys talking about?… You mean that same under-paid and over-worked bunch, who are always begging for a bribe at every opportunity. Question!…Do these cops who put their lives on the line everyday have a Gov’t mandated life insurance policy?

    • guy123 UNITED KINGDOM says:

That’s a very good point cochore, people should stop for a minute and think of these humans who are expected to stop the beasts roaming our streets, because thats what they are they are only humans like the rest of us.

    • Berkeley Van Bowen CANADA says:

      LOL. Life Insurance Policy? NOPE!

Sometime ago there was talk by the PPP that surviving relatives of Cops who got killed “in the line of duty” would receive a million Guyana dollars. Even if this policy is inplace, it does not address the officers who are killed or die outside the direct line of duty.

  3. bbuckman UNITED STATES says:

instead od critiising,we have to change the culure.this can only be done by what we see, hear and learn,it will take about 10 yrs to have an impact.

  4. rwilliams CANADA says:

The political administration wastefully spends billions of dollars on pet and propaganda projects; this money should be spent on the police and security services, to adequately serve and protect they society from criminals.

  5. rwilliams CANADA says:

Yes, Policemen and women, if injured or they die in the line of duty, their families and dependants should be adequately compensated.
Only, in this way, will qualified and competent individuals be attracted to the membership of the Guyana Police Force.
it is futile to try an implant party loyalist into the ranks of the above institution, who are not really interested in or competent for the above job, and as a result, ending up ‘ with square pegs in round holes ‘.
Pay these brave souls for putting their lives and their family welfare , under constant danger and death, in the interest of the larger society.

  6. rwilliams CANADA says:

All of us have to learn and do new things every day of our lives. These workers will have to do the same with time and in their own interest.
We should encourage and support them to do so.
