Corentyne residents will be treated to African drumming and dancing by the Mandingo African Group from July 31 in celebration of Emancipa-tion Day.

One of the organizers of the event, Eli Hazel, told Stabroek News that the celebration will begin at 8 pm with members of the group “going around to villages and conveying messages by drums. This is the first time that the group would be going around to the residents and I think it would be something special for Berbice.” The group will also be performing at manager Cecil Light’s residence at Nurney Village.

On Emancipation Day, Creole food and articles of African clothing, craft and other cultural items will be displayed. Full public participation is urged as the events will boost knowledge of African ancestry.

Light said the late Barkley formed the group at Nurney over 30 years ago. It comprises 20 members including four drummers.

Thomas Mendonza is the eldest member. According to him the group was named by the late Robert Williams of Manchester and participated at the first Carifesta in 1972.
