Canada-based Guyanese and other theatre enthusiasts from the Diaspora in the Caribbean are getting a first-hand glimpse of what Guyana has in store for Carifesta with the premier of ‘Sweet, Sweet Karila.’

According to a press release from the Carifesta Secretariat the Caribbean ER Roots International Arts Theatre Inc hosted a nine-day adaptation of the Guyana radio play “Sweet Karila” by the late Dr Victor Forsythe. It was adapted for stage by Guyanese playwright Leon Saul.

The piece opened on July 17 at the Palmerston Library Theatre in Toronto.

According to the organizers of the production “it is a gripping but comedic tale” of two Guyanese families the Herods from Buxton and the Samaroos from Lusignan, as told by village elder and raconteur “Uncle John John.” The play was also described as a bitter-sweet tale of patriotism and sacrifice of a loved one while doing his duty to protect family, community and nation.

The cast comprises Trevor Murray, Eli Goree, Ras Leon, Jem Hewitt, Nikki Green TJ McLaughlin, Sandra Maharaj and others.

The play will be held at Carifesta X as part of the Canadian contingent’s participation.
