Anything to do with PPP is bad news.GuyanaInc. I will never forget what Indira Gandhi told me , Every country yearns for self rule, but Guyana is not ready and since Independence Guyana has achieved nought .
Guyana has survived by the grace of God. Jagdeo know everything. What Ghir does is not that important, he is the best they can find. My friends keep asking when I'm taking a trip to Guyana, that deserves no answer. Tourism is a dream and Guyana will be a laughing stock always and any country that is run by beggars will remain in the dump.

My flight was delayed out of Guyana on Tuesday AM and so I waited from 2.00 am to 7.00am at the airport until it was morning and lights were not needed - so the connecting flight in Trinidad had to wait on all passengers coming from Guyana and ended up being delayed into JFK because of this - I mean this situation upsets all connecting flights and of course time is money for the airlines - no wonder no foreign airline wants to invest in our underdeveloped country. In addition the Guyanese people pay for this in the stigmatizing treatment they receive at those other airports in the Caribbean - I believe the more critical issue here is - that god forbid there is a mass emergency or disaster in the country - then the people of Guyana will have to wait until daytime for emergency relief to get to them - it also makes us no use to other countries since we cannot even support any flights if necessary in and out of Guyana - I mean making this a priority is a "no brainer" - so why can't the management of the country - use their brains and fix this very important component of the country's infrastructure.

It has always been a laughing stock.
Now, more than ever the jokes are increasing and this regime is clueless with mis-management and croynism at an all time high.
The high tide has come in and taken the people with brains away.

Very good memory... I recall the days of BOAC, then British Airways, Air France, KLM, Pan Am et al. I never heard back then that the runway lights were not working, ever!!!
It only took the PPP 16 years to bring Guyana to a standstill.
Long live the PPP.

Have you even considered why Ghir is in this position.
Many, many screw ups under this chap and he is still running the show.
The squatters, the many security issues with the perimeter of the airport.
Note it is business as usual... and will continue to shame Guyana.

Chemist, don't even try to understand the logic of this regime.
This regime's "cake shop" mentality is beyond belief.
Imagine the international airport has no ILS, now the basics of any airport "landing lights" can not be reliable or maintained.
It goes to show the mind set of this regime.
More sad days ahead.

If its not one thing, it’s the other at the Guyana Airport...frustratingly most of the malfunctions are man-made.

I noted on my last 3 consecutive trips out of Guyana that the Air Conditioning system in the departure lounge was off. It was unclear if they were off voluntarily or down due to mechanical problems because in all three instances when an answer was sought, I was dismissed with a comment by the local staff that "they" didn’t feel hot. When I further requested to speak to the CEO of the Airport, I was told that he is “busy with important things”.

Damn skippy, I've got something to say about this situation. My family is scheduled to arrive at night at Timehri next week; should their trip be cancelled (and I did not say postponed)?
Are arrangements in place with ALL airlines that flights to and from Guyana should be conducted during Guyana daylight hours ONLY until the situation regarding lights is efficiently addressed? The airlines' personnel are also at risk, what with airline companies already addressing fuel concerns and expenses by permitting only the minimum volume on flights.
The situation regarding appropriately qualified personnel, equipment, training and securty is patently obvious and transparent, therefore i'll not waste my time nor energy to address that; i am quite concerned of my family's safety as i am sure others are about their families also.
Perhaps you can socialize these concerns at the appropriate level(s) so that they can be expeditiously addressed in an efficient, non-political, non finger pointing manner.

Consider this. The following international services operated into Atkinson Airport in 1959.
1. British West Indian Airways – daily flights to and from Trinidad.
2. Pan American World Airways – two return flights weekly from New York, with onward connections to Paramaribo, Cayenne and Belem.
3. K.L.M. Royal Dutch Airlines – two return flights weekly between Curacao and Paramaribo.
4. Air France – two return flights weekly between the French West Indian islands and Cayenne,
5. Cruzeiro-do-Sol (Brazil) – one return flight weekly from Rio via Manaos and Boa Vista.

Plus BG Airways (Gov’t) with scheduled local services to:
1. Rupununi (North Savannah) - Weekly
2. Rupununi (South Savanna) – Fortnightly
3. Orinduik – Weekly
4. Imbaimadai – Fortnightly
5. Bartica – Thrice Weekly
6. Mazaruni District – Thrice Weekly
7. North West District- Monthly
8. Mackenzie – 2 flights, thrice weekly

How the mighty have *%^$#& up!

Here I was giving the government kudos for upgrading the airport. Little did I realize that this upgrade did not include the most basic of importance...No, not the toilets, the runway!!!
INFRASTRUCTURE! INFRASTRUCTURE! INFRASTRUCTURE! People of Guyana pay attention to what your taxes are paying for.

Irreverend..I hope you're documenting all these "examples of good governance" offsite somewhere...this count could come in as a handy reminder when the Guyanese forget these incidents in 2011.

CANTBDEAR mentioned that the Government
‘Rather than REPLACE worn out/obsolete equipment/material they take the CHEAPEST way out by FIXING’.......... That is something we all do.
We all of us, try to repair our cars instead of replacing them, however, it is clear that this landing lights problem is at the core of keeping the (ONLY) international airport in Guyana functioning properly.
Although a quick FIX is needed to get us through Carifesta, one would hope that after this embarrassment, the Government will ensure WHOLLY NEW systems and backups are installed very soon indeed. With Ogle Airport being upgraded to international status, this will help eventually.

But at present the SAFETY of passengers is at stake.
Furthermore the PROFITS of airline companies will be hit if air planes cannot have scheduled landing slots guaranteed.
With the current escalation of fuel prices this could stall regularisation of flights to Guyana if loss-making air planes have to fly around the Caribbean waiting for ground problems in Guyana to be resolved.

Since the days of BOAC; October 2008 will be the first time that direct flights from the UK to Guyana will be possible. Let us not jeopardise these new progressive changes.
Those storms recently have been EXCEPTIONAL. Mother Nature tested CJI Airport and the systems failed. It is not the end of the world and as CANTBDEAR mentioned, it is time for system replacement.

May I suggest that the bloggers contact office of president in Guyana and ask that a competent CEO be installed at the Chedi Jagan International Airport. This situation requires a competent stewart at the helm to manage the nation's only air gateway to the world.
