The prison officer who should have been keeping a close eye on the convicted prisoner who escaped from the New Amsterdam Hospital has been interdicted from duty pending an inquiry, reliable sources have informed this newspaper.

Up to press time last evening Lyndon Flavius, 22, of First Street, Bartica was still on the run and authorities had not received any information on his whereabouts.
Reports reaching Stabroek News are that around 2 am on Monday, Flavius successfully removed his foot cuffs and escaped from the building.

It is unclear how the man managed to free himself or whether he was seen leaving the premises by other patients or the nursing staff.

The prison officer who was guarding him had cuffed him to his bed and left to go to the lavatory.
Flavius, who was serving a three-year sentence for break and enter and larceny,  was hospitalized after a fight with another inmate at the New Amsterdam Prisons earlier.
He was scheduled to be released in 2010.

Does the authorities (the police or prison supervisors) ever evaluate these escorts to see if they are related in anyway to these prisoners they are supposed to be escorting and guarding before they are assigned to escort or guard?
In the future the police should have 2 keys to the handcuffs on the prisoner, one kept by the police and one kept by the doctor or head nurse of the ward, that way it’ll take 2 different people to take bribe to facilitating these “escapes”.
I hope the police finally charge this officer and the courts jail him so as to send the message to other police that this is a serious crime.

    • gtgyal TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS says:

I totally agree with you, and this keeps happening over and over because the penalty for escorts are not stern enough. Make them an example for the others to be more alert when escorting prisoners. These same ones now, later you will read about them committing bigger crimes. The security service in Guyana is deplorable!!!! Clement Rohee needs to step aside how much more proof is needed to figure out this man is incompetent????

  2. bluegrass UNITED STATES says:

these incompetents should be fired then charged with aiding and abetting these criminals. [investigate for pay off]

    • Fineman cousin SAINT LUCIA says:

its all well and good for you to castigate the poor underpaid prison officer those guys work twelve hour shifts when doing hospital duty,i know i was one of them i remember onetime being asked to apologise to a ward sister, doctor and matron of the new amsterdam hospital for refusing to leave the ward while the doctor was doing his rounds, and refusing to uncuff a prisoner who was a paitient ofcourse i was abused and called cruel,by the nursing staff, and im sure you guys if you had know that you too would have castigated me as well but unil you put on the uniform and get the exposure you do not have a clue what people go through in those jobs.

  3. amen-ra UNITED STATES says:

This officer should be disciplined for his negligence. In the future when one needs to relieve themselves they should call for a relieve person to stand guard, while he’s away. This system should be in place when inmates has to be hospitalized and i guarantee they would’nt have any escapee, unless the officer is in cahoots with payola.

    • Trix UNITED STATES says:

The police force is operating at minimum levels of staff, so how can you expect them to have 2 sets of guards for all situations? A prisoner’s job is to try to escape and this one was suscessful in picking the lock of his handcuffs. Lets not blame the police rank in this case.

  4. ALL_GT UNITED STATES says:

If a prisoner is to be guarded, provisions have to be made so that in the event the guard has to use the bathroom, he should have a fellow guard hold his position until he returns. The supervisor should also be checking on the guards every two to three hours and a log book should be kept by the guards. Not only should the guard be punished, but the supervisor also for lack of supervision of those under his charge.

  5. acd9100 UNITED STATES says:

I do not agree with some of you, a prisoner escaped from a policeman from g/town hospital while the policeman went to the bathroom.
when the prisoner was recaptured a few months later, in my presence and the policeman that he had escaped from, he said that he paid the policeman that was guarding him to let him go. i asked him if he can remember the policeman, he said yes. when it was revealed to him that the policeman is infront of him, he got quite.
when asked again how he escaped, he said he used a hair clip to open the handcuff, he then showed us how he did it.
not in all cases officers are paid. when you are guarding a prisoner, you must go to the bathroom during your 8 hour shift. when you go anything can happen while you are in the bathroom.

    • Bricks UNITED STATES says:

Why is there no secure room in the hospital ,Prisoners get sick everyday . The authorities should be held responsible for this situation not the policeman. Once again poor management and no forward planning.

    • bgsbny UNITED STATES says:

……… the prisoner ,, if he’s in any place besides the prison,, automatically bcome the charge of those in whose agency he is and the guard assigned to him ,, for the publics safety ,, hence in this case the nurse/s of the ward should be held responsible for the escape ,, did the cop/guard notify the nurses he was leaving the prisoner to go to the bathroom ? where were the nurses when the prisoner ,, left the ward ,, ? if the nurses were not told ,, then the cop/guard is guilty of negligence conveniently,, if the nurses were told ,, of his departure for the men’s room,, then the nurse/s should be held accountable,, a nurse should have stood over the prisoner ,, for the time it takes to do whatever we all do in the b/room !
and if indeed the nurse/s were told and they paid the prisoner no mind then the conspiracy is with them ,, and not the cop ! the only other scenario is the cop knows of the lackadaisical attitude of the nurse/s,, and chose to use that to his advantage ,, tell the nurse/s for regulation protocol,, to save his skin ,, but allowed the prisoner to go free !………

  6. TIGER CANADA says:

`the prison officer who was gaurding him had cuffed him to his bed before leaving to go to the lavatory’ something is amist here, did he really cuffed him or uncuffed him allowing his escape, this officer is responsible and should be penalised.

  7. paw2180 UNITED STATES says:

That policeman let that convict go. The excuse he made of going to the bathroom was justa cover. If this guy is cuffed to the bed how did he manage to get them off without making a commotion unless it was already opened by the officer. I’m sure he was offered some money and he took it instead of keeping this criminal behind bars where he belongs.

  8. bristar23 UNITED STATES says:

it’s time to hold people accountable for the excape of prisoners. even if u have to pay a special team of police extra money do it but they will be held accountable . not the bs of relocating them to a different ares please

    • mackydog UNITED STATES says:

This is exactly what I said a few “escapes” ago…I suggested that the government form a squad of over seers and put them to watch over the police just like the government did with the Customs when they 1st came to power. They had a squad looking over the Customs who they called Customs Enforcement. That caused the bribery and thiefing from continuing to happen so rampantly. Do the same to the police and call the squad Police Enforcement, I bet these “escapes” won’t happen again.

  9. bristar23 UNITED STATES says:

its to the point now that i think unarmed rent a cops o sorry security personal here in the u.s. do a better job the guyana police with weapons lol.

  10. Steel UNITED STATES says:

….yeah, this is not rocket science or math or physics. For thousands of years prisoners have been guarded. Haven’t we in this age learned anything? The prisoner escaped and we are analyzing the circumstances. Heads should be rolling from the highest. Simple. Isn’t It? Then we take our jobs seriously. If you complain of the job find another better one but do what is required of you as long as you you are on it…again…from the highest.
