The CXC Theatre Arts workshop held on Thursday was a resounding success, facilitator Yvonne Weekes said.

The workshop aimed at improving the quality of theatre taught in secondary schools. Its objectives included improving the way that theatre is handled and bringing awareness to Caribbean territories that do not offer the subject. The workshop also examined the CXC syllabus, an assessment of the elements of theatre and dance and learning how to create drama and dance improvisation. The session also touched on what teachers need to do to help students with their School Based Assessment.

The classes which were intended for the teachers of theatre attracted a good number of youth. They were then required to use all that they learnt and work in groups to create a dance and drama. The plot was expected to encompass the elements of theatre including resolving the ‘problem’ as part of the plot.

Weekes said that it was obvious from the reactions that the sessions were essential and well received. She said that many teachers who had not taught the syllabus before are definitely going to return to their countries and “agitate” for its addition to the school’s programme or for its improvement where it is already taught. Weekes said too she is grateful for the experience Carifesta has provided to host the programme.

The workshop was hosted at the Carifesta Hospitality Village at the GNS Sports Ground.
