Several persons have responded to the plight of 23-year-old Ovena Braithwaite and according to the god-mother of her son, Ann Davidson; she has brightened up at the prospect of a new home.

Braithwaite’s heart-rending story was published in yesterday’s edition of Stabroek News. Last Saturday a storm blew off the roof of the one bedroom shack that the pregnant mother of two had called home. In June her husband had mysteriously disappeared and life for the family was in a state of turmoil.

Yesterday, Davidson, who was one of a few neighbours who assisted Braithwaite, said that employees from Gafoors visited Braithwaite in her Yarrowkabra, Linden/Soesdyke community and brought food for the children as well as other foodstuff. She said that they promised to construct a new home for Braithwaite and are to return today to take measurements. Locally-based relatives of an American-based woman also made contact with her and promised assistance.

“She is much brighter”, Davidson said noting that the prospect of a new home had greatly cheered Braithwaite up.

  4. After reading the story of the Yarrowkabra woman Ovena Braithwaite in yesterday’s news I was overwhelmed with sadness that brought tears to my eyes.

Here is a fellow human being who is down and out barley clinging to the very edge of existence. How could anyone not be moved to help her.

I live thousands of miles from her and as such cannot go there in person to help, but I did call upon God to send someone to go and render assistance to this woman and he answered my prayers. Had I been living there I would have gone immediately to render assistance.

Reading today’s news brought a smile to my face, thanks to all who responded with acts of kindness especially Gafoor’s and Sons.

Eventually Ovena Braithwaite will have a roof over her head and hopefully her husband back.

Thanks Stabroek News for carrying this story to print otherwise this woman might not have had the help she needed.

helping this poor woman, and children. This is what being Guyanese stands for, opening your doors, and sharing with your neighbours what you have.Again may God bless you all.Thank you Sattaur.

To the management and staff of Gafsons Industries, and all others who responded to this woman’s plight, I say thank you for doing this.
She is a Native, this is Amerindian Heritage Month and also the Muslim Holy Month Of Ramandan.
Where is Mrs. Pauline Sukhai, Minister Of Amerindian Affairs?
Where is The Red Cross and The Disaster Relief Council which is headed by Mrs. Hinds?
Mr. Lall and staff of Kaieteur News, maybe you can start a funding project to assist people in these and similar situation.
You have done it before, for victims of the thusanami, your own press men who were murdered, the victims of the lusignan masacare.
Poverty daunts a person spirit and they feel that they have no purpose in life.
Please, Mr. Lall, you have done it before and was successful. Please do this on a continus basis to assist our guyanese regardless of race or religion who are in need.
    God Bless.

      Well, Raphael.

It’s good to know that you, too, want to know what the Amerindian Affairs Ministry is doing to help Oveta and to ensure that similar stuff like this does not happen.

I’m sure that there are many more Oveta’s out there in our rural areas.

Nonetheless, it’s good to see the overwhelming support of Guyanese at home and abroad to this mother’s plight. But we have to look beyond the here and now and stop plastering sores.

We have to get to the root of the canker called poverty. It cannot be easily eradicated, but surely it can be brought to a level that is tolerable.

It does the heart good to know that people can still be touched by a story like this and that the abundant cares of this world were unsuccessful at impeding the human spirit and concern that we all expressed. I felt proud to have been a part of the ‘movement’ who pledged to assist Ovena in whatever way we can. Even though Gafoors has stepped up and is offering assistance, I would still like to encourage my fellow bloggers to follow through with their pledges and send whatever they can for Ovena.

Yesterday I suggested that a “Clearing House” of sorts could be established in the USA, Canada and even England, to which benevolent individuals, who themselves maybe experiencing financial difficulties, but who never-the-less may be willing to contribute whatever they can afford, can send their “Widow’s Mite” to. The idea is “one one dutty build dam”. If people can only spare $1, $5, $10, or $20, then they can send it to the “Clearing House” which will then forward the combined sum to Guyana.

Anyone who is interested in sending money but only have a small sum that they can afford, please contact me at guyanafilms@yahoo.com. Typically it cost $10 for every $100 that is sent to Guyana but I have friends at a shipping company in Atlanta who will charge $8 for every $100 sent. This appeal is for those with only a few dollars to send, as those of you with larger sums may choose to send it directly to Guyana. However, think of all that could be saved in transferal fees if the money is sent through a central location.

  10. otimistic pessimist UNITED STATES says:

In addition to sending money, I am also suggesting that those of you who may have articles of clothing and shoes that no longer fit or that you no longer like, and would like to contribute to some needy person in Guyana, contact me as well as I am offering my services in that regard as well. I am willing to act as a clearing house for these articles as well and send combined shipment to the needy in Guyana. The email address is guyanafilms@yahoo.com.

    • Optimistic Pessimist UNITED STATES says:

I intend to follow through on my pledge and intend to demonistrate that I am not all talk and emotionalism. If there are others like me who live in foreign countries and would like to do something for our people back home (I know Malaika06 to be one such) then we could sieze this opportunity to give back to the place that we were born.

This assistance that I am talking about here transcends race, religion and political affiliation. Plain and simple it is just about reaching out and touching someone, helping people who for what ever reason, cannot help themselves like Ovena Braithwaite.

If after the big hue and cry and emotionalism of this woman’s unfortunate plight dies down and any of you still feel a desire to, in what ever way you can, help her and other unfortunate people back in the country of your birth, please contact me at guyanafilms@yahoo.com and let us get to work setting up some kind of benevolent organisation whose sole purpose will be to assist especially destitute women and children of Guyana.

Stabroek News, we need to hear more of these stories. We need to see faces and get to know people who are in desperate need and have no other place to turn for help. Some of us need a little jump start as it were and others need to see the tangible results of their sacrifice. Please continue to bring sad plights from the back burner and a place where no one seems to care, and areate it and let it see the light of day.

There is already an establish body with links in Guyana that can service this ara of need. It is a non profit organisation which already sent relief aid to Guyana in the past and I know will be willing to do in the future. It is called HUMAN CONCERN INTERNATIONAL.Contant then ther are already established and trustworthy.
