Commissioner of Police Henry Greene said the letter he received from the attorney representing mining camp owner Leonard Arokium about a mobile phone of one of the deceased being in active use did not provide enough information, but the matter has since been handed to Crime Chief Seelall Persaud.

In a brief invited comment to Stabroek News yesterday, Greene said he received the letter from Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes but had no idea as to the telephone number being referred to.

“We have to get our hands on that number and be provided with more information so that we could do our verification and follow the matter up,” Greene told this newspaper.

According to him, Persaud will follow up and acquire the necessary information.
Hughes wrote to Greene on Friday saying he has received credible and verifiable information that the mobile phone of one of the men killed at the camp continued to be in active use.

In the letter, which this newspaper has seen, Hughes said information  revealed that the mobile phone owned by Dax Arokium, which he had in his possession at the time of the June murders, has been in active use since the Lindo Creek crime scene ceased to be secured by the joint services.

Hughes also told Greene that independent investigations have also revealed that the use of the mobile phone continued even after Rondell `Fineman’ Rawlins was killed last month. Hughes said he was instructed to alert the commissioner to the development as this might prove to be of “some use in continued investigations into the murders.” This newspaper has since learnt that many of the calls made from the mobile phone have been traced to several persons and homes in Linden. The user of the phone could have critical information on what happened at Camp Lindo. The persons to whom the calls were made would also be important.

Leonard Arokium has maintained that he felt that the killings could not have been done by Fineman saying he believed elements of the joint services were behind the killings.

Leonard Arokium stumbled on what appeared to be the burnt remains of his eight workers, which included his son and brother, Dax and Cecil Arokium.

Police, from the outset, had blamed the killings on Fineman and his gang but Arokium argued that it would defy all logic for Fineman and his men to have done it if indeed they were the ones who had fled from Christmas Falls on June 6.

If they had fled Christmas Falls, they would have retreated across the Berbice River. To execute the Lindo Creek killings they would have had to re-cross the Berbice River – something that would have posed logistical challenges – travel 10 miles and moreover they would have had to sweep past police and army units who had swarmed the area in the aftermath of June 6 to get to the Lindo Creek camp, Leonard Arokium had said.

He argued that the Joint Services knew where his camp was as they had shared supplies with some of his workers before, including his son Dax.

The police had denied the essence of some of what Leonard Arokium had said claiming they had a witness who would substantiate their version. No witness has since been presented.

It comes to mind that if one were to write a letter giving information about a phone the number would be prominent in that letter.
SN – you sure that the letter didn’t list the telephone number?

Nigel Hughes is one of the best lawyers in Guyana. I don’t think he would have sent a letter without the telephone number. Even if he did, why didn”t Green reply asking for the number?

  6. GoTo the Source BAHAMAS says:

You don,t have to provide more info than what the lawyer did,Greene has the number used go to the phone company collect the records find the ara where the suspect lives and monitor him or her then pounce, when you have all evidence.

BRILLIANT!!!! This is not rocket science. In a situation like this the COP has access to such info as long as he requests it through the appropriate channels.

Yes, indeed Evileyes. Brilliant lawyer…Guyana’s best. Hughes’ client instructed him to write to the commissioner of police and overlooked the most basic of info – the phone #. Hughes, you think the poilce has a crystal ball. Very frustration for the police!!! Very stupid, Leonard and Hughes. Is this another distraction for the police???

hey, we have a copies of the phone bills. Do you want a copy? They really abused my brother’s cell phone. Shame on them, and shame on the police for not following up. What happen to the DNA results? where are the remains? shame, shame, shame on the guyanese government.

  8. Badlall CANADA says:

This number and all records of incoming and outgoing calls can be had in a flash. A flimsy excuse may come that a court order is necessary to get the information……. the courts are predictable a court order may take decades. . The men are dead and the answer is in that very call log as to the calls made and recieved. In the event that there is stalling as we see already the lawyer should release publicy all details of calls on this phone i am positive that he has that information.

  9. Deo UNITED STATES says:

Certainly ordinary citizens like myself cannot fathom the statements of the coercive and intelligence arms of the state. Commonsense however, dictates that there are times that they would be able to reveal information, do spins, or just remain mum plain and simple.
What continuously I believe the general populace following these issue find aggravating and annoying by those making them on behalf of the state, To quote Mr Greene, as reported in the Stabroek News
“We have to get our hands on that number and be provided with more information so that we could do our verification and follow the matter up,” Greene told this newspaper.”
Amazing amazing..get the bloody number, be definitive, tell the public that the Crime Chief has pursued operational procedures, and we expect some response in lets say 24 hours….These bureaucratic types of answers gives us the ordinary smart citizens the perception that we really didn’t have to let you know this attitude. And you know what, quite unfairly the President and Cabinet is judged by these perceptions. If one simply re-read most of the negative comments on the functionality of the upper government functionaries it is the lack of providing information in a manner that gives hope, indicates action, and provides the basis for which we will get feedback. I hope those in authority find it appropriate to read these blogs and sinply don’t discard its meaningfulness in this day and age.

    • true guyanese UNITED STATES says:

deo,,,you need to do some more research..before you talk…..the c.o.p say they need more info that is correct…..with technologies so advanced any one can use a phone without the phone com registered it………..they should make you the president and c.o.p…………..if you claimed you are smart then i don’t see any smart reasoning……….

  10. BIG D UNITED KINGDOM says:

Whoever has that phone,is in possession of stolen property, from the murdered man.Get the person, and they will have to explain how it came into their possession.Further it is not difficult to tract those calls. The phone company is duty bound to supply this information, once the appropriate course is followed. The owner of the phone and his work mates were murdered.
