One charged with attempted murder
An 18-year-old university student from Berbice narrowly escaped being raped and murdered by two attackers last week but has lost her thumb in the process. One man has since been charged with attempted murder.
The incident, which occurred around 8:30 pm as the student was returning home from a stationery store at Port Mourant, Corentyne has left her deeply traumatized. The teen received seven stitches to her head and 43 to her hand.
One of the alleged attackers, Devindra Thomas of Swamp Section, Rose Hall Town, said to be in his late teens, was charged with attempted murder at the Whim Court on Monday. He was not required to plead and was refused bail. Magistrate Chandra Sohan adjourned the matter for September 30.
Thomas was captured during a search a few hours after the incident while his accomplice is still at large. The two pounced on her and one started to touch her buttocks. In retaliation, she shouted, “What is wrong with you? Go along your bloody way!”
At this stage one jumped off a bicycle they were riding and said “you can’t talk to me like that, me a gangster.” She told Stabroek News that the next thing she knew one of the attackers grabbed her by the neck and “tried to wring it backwards to break it.”
She said she “tried to scream but no sound came out” as she struggled to break loose. Meanwhile the other attacker was grabbing at other parts of her body. She eventually managed to free herself from the grip and started to scream.
She said that by this time the attackers pulled out a cutlass and fired a chop to her head. They fired a second chop but this time she managed to “block the chop” with her left hand causing her thumb and index finger to be severed.
The student said she screamed and ran towards the stationery store while the man continued firing chops which narrowly missed the back of her neck.
She was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. She was admitted to the institution for five days and plans to seek further treatment in Georgetown.
Efforts by the doctors to save her thumb proved futile. Another surgery was subsequently performed successfully to allow her other fingers to function normally.
She told this newspaper that robbery was not the motive as the attackers did not remove her Motorola A1200 cellular phone, cash and a gold ring she had in her possession.

If they want to rob and kill,
BRING BACK THE CAT-O-NINE!
If they want to rape and pillage,
BRING BACK THE CAT-O-NINE!
For all the gangsters, thugs and jiggabugs,
BRING BACK THE CAT-O-NINE!
T nT catting them. Bring back the Cat.
I’m of the view that many of these seemingly senseless crimes are being committed by persons under the influence of something. Whether it’s alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or SATAN. All these are readily available in Guyana today and our country has indeed lost its innocence. Guyana has become like many of our Caribbean and South American neighbors with high crime rates. My deepiest sympathy for the injuries sustained by that young lady and I hope that the perp gets what’s coming to him, the maximun, under the law and then some. God help us all.
Bourda man
You said it all for me. The million dollar question now is how do we minimise these incidences and try to root out their causes?. Any suggestions????
I’ve read most of the bloggers above comments calling for action by the law enforcment and soon relised how confused I am. One time the law enforcment is lacking in the execution of their duties, another time they are using excessive force and now there is an out cry for justice with all sort of suggestions as to their punishment. I strongly condem the action of these two individuals and wish that their face the full extent of the law. As it relates to the young woman{victim} I express sympathy on behalf of all the bloggers, the readers, the editor and myself. ‘We are very sorry for the pain and suffering caused by these two criminals action and trust that you’ll recover speedily and safely’. Only who feels it knows it. Let the police do their job of ridding seocity of criminal gangs cartels.
I say hang the criminals mr. jagdeo.
What an inhumane & calluous act.. I pray this young lady get a speedy & full recovery both physically & emotionally. As 4 those parasites who r responsible 4 her pain, let him b severely punished 4 both himself & his co-conspirator if e refuses to identify him.
I’m of the view that a lot of the seemingly senseless crimes being committed in Guyana today are done by persons under the influence of something. Whether it’s alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or SATAN – something drastic has to be done to curbe this situation which is getting out of hand. I don’t know what should be done and by whom but I’ll start with the Government and law inforcement since safety of the citizens rest with them. Then our clergy could have an input. I feel so sorry for that young lady. The perp must get the maximum under the law and then some which will send a message to others out there like him. Let him have a speedy trial.
In short those so called ganster need to be hang
Such a horrific crime perpetrated by teens once again. What is going on in the schools of Guyana, why aren’t these kids in school being taught skills if they’re not intered in book smarts? Where are all the Governmental Programes to assist these wayward children who wander the streets with weapons to rape, rob, injure and kill their fellow mankind?
What a brave and smart young woman to have survived this attack on her life. I do wish you well and hope you may be able to return to Universtiy and some sort of normalcy.May GOD bless you with the strength to heal your wounds both in and outwards.
Another attempt to sexually abuse one of our country’s future, I’ve made mention before that it seems this type of criminal behaviour is on the rise in Guyana and the need to re-examine the justice system’s`MO’ in sentencing rapists and would-be rapists. The sentences given to these perverts are too meagre.
This is so sad that our ladies are not free to walk the streets of Beautiful Guayna. I Pray that she recovers speedily and the perpetrators brought to justice however grave it may seem to the GHRA as they are never around the victims but defend the perpetrators.
