Academic high-fliers and the teachers who have been guiding them were awarded on Friday at the Region Three Department of Education’s 12th Annual Awards Ceremony.

The awards were presented at a ceremony at the West Demerara Secondary School. Among the recipients were the region’s top students at the National Grade Six Assessment, the top Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination students, the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) top student, impromptu speech winners, national spelling bee winner, the national GUYAID essay writing competition winner, as well as the teachers who have retired and the long-service awardees of the Region Three District.

The top student for the Region Three National Grade Six Assessment was Sharmilla Ramlall, who secured a place at Queen’s College with a score of 548. The area top student was Nicholas Ragnauth of La Harmonie, Demerara River scoring 466 marks, while the top CSEC student of Region Three was Ahila Singh who wrote thirteen subjects, gaining nine Grade Ones and four Grade Twos.

She was followed by Tiffany Chowtie of Leguan Secondary School with five Grade Ones, three Grade Twos and two Grade Threes and Bibi Salima Ali of Leonora Secondary with five Grade Ones and three Grade Twos. The impromptu speech recipients were Tashana Watkins, Silvy Boerensthm and Marcia Clarke, while the national spelling bee winner was Liza John of Leonora Primary School. The CPCE top student was Devika Bagwandin.

Juliet Mangra of St Lawrence Primary, Loretta July of Leonora Nursery and Chrishna Kandial of Uitvlugt Secondary School were among the retirees awarded; Sita Persaud of Endeavour and Commons Primary, Ann Adams of Greenwich Park Primary and Ingrid Carrington of Patentia Primary were among the long-service awardees.
