I’m shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Harris, my inspiration and the person to whose work I aspire. I’m a cartoonist myself and have done editorial cartooning for many of the Caribbean’s leading newspapers. Although I am Guyanese, ironically, I’ve never done any cartoon work for a Guyanese newspaper because I always knew the best cartoonist resided in Guyana and his name is Harris.
I’ve always been a fan of Mr. Harris’ work since I was home in Guyana; from the days of A. Littlesoap and Edward Riley. Although all these years have passed I’m still an admirer of Mr. Harris’ work. I’m always amazed at how easily he is able to capture the features and expressions of known public personalities. And the humor is right on the money.
I’ve always tried to and am still working to bring my work up to Mr. Harris’ standard. He and the famous Mort Drucker are the two artists who inspire my art.
You can well understand my shock (and that’s not a work I use lightly) when browsing the Stabroeknews online, and reading that Mr. Harris has passed and in a nursing home too. It was always my intention to meet the man, but had preferred doing so when I felt my work was closer to his than it is now. Unfortunately, time has not permitted this.
So it is with a sad heart that I say this; Farewell to the best cartoonist Guyana has ever produced. If I eventually get anywhere near the high quality of cartooning set by Mr. Harris I would be satisfied.
To Paul and other Guyanese cartoonists, I say keep the flame ablaze and continue the good works Mr. Harris has done before.

ps. Can something like an anthology of Mr. Harris’ works be published? I hope Paul can contact me via my web site to see if we could make this possible. I would love to see A. Littlesoap and Edward Riley live again.

I can remember reading his cartoons from my early childhood.

A master craftsman, an icon. More attention needs to be paid to the treatment of people suffering from diabetes.
