Dear Editor,
I refer to two letters in your letter column that made reference to the need for the health sector to have a neurologist.
May I state that Guyana has the best neurologist in the region in the person of a Guyana Scholar, Dr Walter Ramsahoye.
In November of 2007 he wrote to the neurosurgeons at St Barnabas Hospital Complex in New Jersey, USA, which caused the doctors on two occasions to enquire, “Who is that doctor? We are impressed. That is exactly what we intend to do.”
Yours faithfully,
(Name and address supplied)

Had or didn’t had one, is simply because of Xenophobia against the other professionals of other Foreign lands, because they do a better work and cheaper than the locals….. Simply as that!!!
Excellent, but is he accessible to the average citizens????
That Guyana should have only one neurologist is not enough, we need more. The actual neurologist must be one of the most important men in the country, like a God maybe …
A few thoughts – how does one really know who is the best in the region?
Is it based on publications, years of experience, contribution to society or expertise in recent technology? It is silly to make these conclusions based on limited exposure. There are several world experts in Neurology practising in the Region.
The professional culture among Physicians in other parts of the world is often complimentary to colleagues in the presence of patients – not so much in Guyana as Doctors frequently malign colleagues. I will therefore be very cautious in my conclusions of who is the best doctor / neurologist. No doubt the doctor mentioned above is capable in his field but even him might be disturbed at being labelled as the best neurologist in the region.
