According to an eyewitness Route 47 minibus BKK 1065 was heading south on Camp Street while motor car PKK 6409 was travelling west along Norton Street. The woman said that the car did not stop as it was supposed to but turned into Camp Street and slammed into the minibus.

The bus was knocked onto its side while the car ran into the front of a pharmacy at the south western side of the junction causing a nut vendor to jump onto its bonnet seconds before he would have been hit.

Keith Johnson told Stabroek News that he was sitting at his nut table when he heard a woman scream “look wha happening there.” “By the time I could react the car done deh pon me already,” the visibly shaken man recounted. He said that he heard the loud impact upon collision, “but by the time I raise meh head all I coulda do was jump on the car bonnet to save me self.”

Meanwhile several persons including two children were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Alana Melvin was sitting in the conductor’s seat of the bus, carrying her two small children with her. She said that she did not see exactly what happened but held on to the children who luckily escaped without injury. “One just bump she head, and the other one bump her knee,” Melvin related to Stabroek News at the hospital. The driver of the minibus Huburn Saul called Johnny and several other passengers were taken for treatment. Janice Datson of 287, East Ruimveldt suffered cuts to her head and face. She was sitting in the front seat of the bus.

She told Stabroek News that the bus was driving along when the car suddenly came out of nowhere. The woman lost her purse and her shoes in the chaos that ensued after the accident.

My my my, some wouldn’t believe this would normally happen on the streets daily by most mini bus operators and car drivers. The police need to stop taking bribes and let the law breakers be dealt with. Many minibus and cars are now diverting into streets that do not have traffic lights so as to get a head start on the other busses or whatever. If they were in America or Canada they would abide by the people law because they wouldn’t want to be deported. I agree with the government now about the busses they want to bring to Guyana, at least we should have less accidents. The tint on most vehicles these days is UNBELIEVEABLE!!! How can the police allow these things to go unnoticed?? what about the music they banned…. why is it still playing ?? why should a taxi play its music at a high level at 5 in the morning??? I think stiffer and i mean STIFFER penalities should be implemented on road users no matter who they are…the normal man or the minister.

thisis one country in the world that do not have driving schools,so that people can be taught how to drive on the roads in Guyana.maybe there is one in georgetown.what about the rest of Guyana. the police officer in charge of testing and issueing the drivers licence stands as a king.it is common knowledge to hear that a police would ask someone to pay 50,000 or a 100,000 so that they could have a licence to drive, instead of having a proper driving school like in almost every country in the world where people are taught to drive , then tested by a competent person , then isued a drivers licence.but in Guyana you pay the police and get a drivers licence. how great. how great the home affairs ministry have things going in Guyana. many have become milioneirs from this great driving school.

I ASSUME AS PER YOUR COMMENTS THAT AMERICA IS ACCIDENT FREE…WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY…..HOW CAN YOU COMPARE GUYANA TO THE MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD….THERE MAY BE A PROBLEM IN THE ROAD SAFETY ACT, BUT THAT DOSEN’T MEAN THAT GUYANA IS BACKWARD…….THERE IA A REASON FOR COWS,DOGS,DONKEYS ETC ON THE ROAD….YOU LOOK AND VIEW THE SITUATIONS WHERE OWNERS OF ANIMALS ARE CONCERNED AND YOU WILL FIND THE ANSWERS…..RIGHT NOW PENALTIES ARE BEING IMPOSED ON OWNERS OF ANIMALS, THAT FAIL TO KEEP THEIR ANIMALS UNDER CONTROL……..GIVE IT SOME TIME AND THE ROADS WILL BE CLEAR OF ANIMALS, THEN YOU WILL HAVE SOME KIND OF COMMENTS THEN ABOUT THE FREEDOM OF ANIMALS……

Why do we even have our say here?Do the people at the license office ever read this?
They know they are selling drivers license to kill and they will not stop simply because the money to them is greater than life….I know this for a fact because this has been going on since I was asked to pay a bribe for my driver license in 1973….like I said..its an inheritance thing…passed from generation to genaration…it will not stop no matter what….wish everone good luck this time around…..

    • guy123 UNITED KINGDOM says:

evilwhatever..is that why the government of today is just like the one we had in 1973?

    • good guy UNITED STATES says:

Evileyes –i recalled that you said that you were asked to pay a bribe and you did not –and continued to drive WITHOUT a License until you left G/T –maybe the License Office will check up on you after reading your blog , and when you return to G/T make you pay for all those years –heeee .

  7. Shea30 UNITED STATES says:

I know for sure this area, like most part of the government controlled facilities, are corrupted. Maybe one solution would be to privatize the licensing section and have the police force be the enforcer of the rules of the road.

  8. AMAR NAUTH UNITED STATES says:

disgrace on the goverment. most overseas readers would have already read these today and probably learn something new about Guyana. what new government we have?no driving shools in the history of independent Guyana.how do the ministers family and their relatives get their drivers licence?
